The South Korean Government Has Designated a National Mourning Period from Today until 24:00 on January 4, 2025, for A Duration of 7 Days

A National Mourning Period of 7 Days Has Been Designated in Relation to the Jeju Air Accident That Occurred at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do, South Korea

Choi Sang-mok, a South Korean politician who has served as acting president and acting prime minister since December 27, 2024, stated during the ”Third Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters Meeting,“ held at the Government Complex Seoul, ”The government has designated a national mourning period from today until 24:00 on January 4, 2025.“

Joint memorial altars will be set up at the accident site and in 17 cities and provinces, including Jeonnam, Gwangju, Seoul, and Sejong. All government ministries, local governments, and public institutions will fly flags at half-mast, and public officials will wear mourning ribbons.

Choi Sang-mok stated, ”As the acting head of the government responsible for the safety and lives of the people, I am deeply saddened and remorseful. I will declare Muan County a special disaster zone and provide all necessary support. The Central Accident Handling Headquarters, established by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, will thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident in collaboration with the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Committee and other relevant bodies, clarify accountability, and disclose the findings transparently and swiftly to the families of the victims and the public. We will ensure that no such tragic accident occurs again by putting in place comprehensive government measures to prevent its recurrence.“
