According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the law will be implemented starting today with a grace period of approximately three years. The enforcement decree includes measures to support the dog meat industry in transitioning to other businesses or closing down, as well as penalties for maintaining facilities for dog meat consumption. The government plans to provide closure support funds and facility demolition costs to dog farming businesses that shut down, and support will be offered through the ’Small Business Closure Support Program‘ for restaurants specializing in dog meat.
With the implementation of the law, 5,625 businesses, including dog farms and restaurants, will need to transition to other industries or close down. After the grace period, starting February 2027, dog meat consumption will be completely banned in South Korea.
