For a long time, humans have regarded objects (things) as tools to make life more convenient, continuously designing and producing new things by sourcing materials from nature. This exhibition challenges this notion by expanding the concept of objects through contemporary art and design practices.

10. Human and Nature: from Romance to Horror

✔ May 24 – August 24, 2024
✔ National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Film & Video 2024 observes the issues arising from our relationships with nature, community, and others, highlighting various efforts to establish new connections. Much has changed in our lives over the past two years amid global pandemics and ongoing concerns. What was once taken for granted has become uncertain, and priorities in life have been redefined.

The most profound impact has been the uncontrollable power of nature, from the threat of invisible viruses to ongoing climate disasters, confronting us with ‘nature as a threatening object of fear’ akin to the Romantic era artists facing the sublime. Concurrently, as time spent indoors increases, there is a growing tendency to experience the vitality of nature up close by cultivating plants and gardens. In 2024, the first program “Nature and Humans: From Romance to Horror” explores the relationship between nature and humans through the perspectives of eight artists.
