Constitution Day commemorates the day on July 17, 1948, when the Constitution of South Korea was established. It is a national holiday that honors the founding of the Constitution, taking into consideration the historical continuity as July 17th was also the founding day of the Joseon Dynasty according to the lunar calendar.
Originally recognized as an official public holiday by the South Korean government, it was excluded from the list of public holidays in 2008 and now is classified as a national commemoration day rather than a public holiday.
On this day, various commemorative events are held to reaffirm the commitment to uphold the constitutional system based on freedom and democracy. Public institutions and households across the country display the national flag, reflecting gratitude to all those who have made democracy possible.
