Today Was South Korea’s 105th Independence Movement Day, Samiljeol

Samiljeol (삼일절), The Independence Movement Day

Samiljeol is one of South Korea’s five national holidays, literally commemorating the March 1 Movement. On March 1, 1919, Korea rebelled against Japanese colonial rule and issued the Declaration of Independence to the world, announcing Korea’s sovereignty. It remains one of the most important national celebrations since liberation. This is due to the historical significance of the March 1 Movement in the history of Korea’s independence. March 1, 2024 marks the 105th Samiljeol.

On March 1, 2024, The Celebration Was Celebrated At the Yu Gwan-sun Memorial Hall

The 105th anniversary of the March 1 Movement was celebrated today with the theme of ‘Long Live Korea, the Great Journey to Freedom.’ More than 1,200 people, including the bereaved families of independence heroes, the Korean diplomatic corps, citizens, and students, attended the ceremony. They reflected on the meaning of the Samiljeol to inherit the spirit of those who fought for independence and develop the country.

President Yoon Suk Yeol, who attended the ceremony, said, “105 years ago today, our heroes declared that Korea is an independent nation and that the Korean people are its owners. At the root of the Declaration of Independence was liberalism, a major trend in world history at the time.”
