Tomorrow, South Korea Will Be Quiet for 35 Minutes Due to Suneung Exam

The 2023’s Suneung(수능) Is Here -November 16, 2023

The 수능 suneng (College Scholastic Ability Test, CSAT) is a test that has been used for college admissions in South Korea since 1994. It is open to high school seniors, graduates, and those who have the equivalent of a high school diploma, such as those who have passed the GED. It is organized by the Korean Curriculum Evaluation Center and is held annually on the third Thursday of November.

The Suneung(수능) Will Be Held At More Than 1,200 Test Centers In 84 Test Districts Across The Country

This year, there will be 504,580 test takers, which is down 3,400 from last year. Of those, the percentage of applicants who were graduates and GED students combined is more than 35%, the highest in 28 years.

A Number Of Changes Will Be Seen On November 16, 2023

  • Government offices and some businesses across the country have adjusted their start times to 10 a.m. tomorrow, an hour later than usual.
  • Seoul city will extend the morning subway rush hour from 7 to 9 a.m. to 6 to 10 a.m. on suneung day and run 31 additional subway trains during the extended hours.
  • Support vehicles for transportation of test takers will also be operated. A total of 698 private and public vehicles will be stationed at subway stations, bus stops, and key points near test centers to provide free rides to test takers who request them.
  • Construction work will also be suspended, and fire trucks will refrain from sounding their sirens to prevent noise.
  • Firefighters will refrain from sounding their sirens as they pass by test centers during the English listening test.
  • The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport will control aircraft takeoffs and landings in all areas of the country from 1:05 to 1:45 p.m. on the afternoon of the suneung to prevent noise. Aircraft flying during this time will be under the control of air traffic control and must wait at least 3 kilometers above the ground.
