The Daegwallyeong Snow Festival, which began in 1993, is renowned as the first winter festival in Korea. Originally aimed at boosting the local economy during the off-season, it has now become a popular winter attraction. This year’s festival features various activities for children, centered around Pyeongchang’s mascot, “Nundongi.”
The “Jeongwol Daeboreum Folk Festival,” held every February in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, celebrates traditional culture and community unity. The festival includes Korean folk games like torch burning, kite flying, and shuttlecock kicking, along with pansori and Korean dance performances. Starting at 6 p.m., it features highlights such as the Ganggangsullae dance and fireworks, offering a meaningful way to reflect on the past year and wish for well-being.
The Cheorwon Hantan River Ice Trekking Festival, held annually in January since 2013, is an eco-tourism event along the Hantan River, which was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2020. Visitors can trek an 8km ice trail while enjoying views of basalt canyons and columnar joints. The festival also offers activities like sledding, zip-lining, and rafting, making it suitable for all age groups. Local restaurants participate, serving regional specialties and traditional foods cooked.
Gochang Cheongnongwon offers lavender and hydrangeas in spring and summer, and pink muhly in fall. The “Gochang Cheongnongwon Lavender Festival,” held from May to June, features a 5,000-pyeong lavender field with beautiful purple blooms, along with several photo zones. Visitors can also enjoy a stroll along the bamboo and pine forest paths. Cafes around the farm provide a perfect spot to relax.
The “International Horticulture Goyang Korea,” Korea’s first international flower exhibition, began in 1997 and is held annually in spring at Lake Park in Ilsan, Gyeonggi-do. The event promotes the development of the floral industry and flower consumption, with over 200 institutions from 25 countries participating. Visitors can enjoy themed floral displays while taking in the beauty of spring.
The Boryeong Mud Festival, held at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, has been a leading summer festival in Korea since its first event in 1998. Attracting visitors from across the country and abroad, the festival promotes the benefits of mud, rich in skin-friendly nutrients. It offers fun for all ages, with events running from day to night, including performances and fireworks.
The “Goesan Red Pepper Festival” is a cultural tourism event held in Goesan, combining the local specialty, Goesan red peppers, with various cultural experiences. The festival features activities like red pepper drumming, golden red pepper hunts, cooking contests, and tastings of red pepper bibimbap. It is held annually in late August to early September, coinciding with the red pepper harvest season.
The Tae-baek Sunflower Festival is a community-led event organized by the Sunflower Cultural Foundation and the Guwau Village Festival Committee. Set at an altitude of 800m, the sunflower field spans a vast area and blooms with over one million sunflowers. Visitors can enjoy a healing experience by walking through the field. The festival also features busking performances, art exhibitions, outdoor sculptures, forest interpretation programs, and sales of local specialties from the Tae-baek area.
The “Gimcheon Gimbap Festival,” which attracted 100,000 people in its first year in 2024, will be held again this October. The festival features various programs such as a cooking competition, Gimbap recipes by chef Lee Hye-jeong, and family-friendly activities. It has become a new cultural event that highlights the local community. This year, expectations are high for the exciting programs to be introduced.
The Byeokchoji Arboretum in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, hosts the Chrysanthemum Festival from September to November. The arboretum features 29 themed gardens and a variety of flowers throughout the year, with a special focus on chrysanthemum sculptures and blooming chrysanthemums in the fall, making it an ideal spot to visit during the season.
