The National Palace Museum of Korea presents a special exhibition, “Blooming Hwarot – Bridal Robes of the Joseon Royal Court,” which brings together a total of 110 artifacts related to bow clothes.
‘Hwarot’ are ceremonial garments worn by brides during their wedding ceremonies, and are considered to be one of the most beautiful pieces of Joseon royal dress. In English, it can be translated as ‘wedding overcoat.’
Currently, there are only about 50 pieces of Joseon royal Hwarots left in the world, with 30 pieces in domestic museums and 20 pieces in overseas museums, making their value immeasurable.
This exhibition will feature three domestic Hwarots, and six overseas Hwarots from international museums.
What makes this exhibition so special is that it features LACMA’s collection of Hwarot, which has been restored with a donation from BTS leader RM.
In September 2022, RM made headlines when it was revealed that he had donated 100 million won per year for two years for the preservation and restoration of cultural properties outside of Korea.
The restored Hwarot is said to be of high cultural value as the embroidery has not fallen off after so many years and the colors of the embroidery threads have been preserved intact.
