Until now, it was only possible to stay in South Korea for 90 days or less by obtaining a tourist visa or entering the country visa-free.
The Ministry of Justice has established a workation visa system that allows workers affiliated with international companies to stay for a longer period of time if they prove their work history and income above a certain level.
If a person’s income is more than twice the GNI per capita of the previous year (KRW 84.96 million per year as of 2022), he or she will be able to stay for one year from the date of entry, with an additional one-year extension for up to two years.
Accompanying family members can also apply for a visa. In addition, foreigners who are currently working in Korea as a short-term visitor can change to a workation visa in South Korea if they meet the work experience and income requirements.
However, workation visa holders are strictly restricted from working in South Korea to protect the local job market. A separate “work visa” is required for employment in South Korea.
