I wanted to experience a Korean spa, like what I’ve seen in K-dramas. Our guide YJ,
met us at near Sinchon station and together to we took a bus to the Supsok Hanbang Land (숲속한방랜드) sauna. This is a local spot nothing fancy, sleek or frills and far from modern amenities—there is no WiFi. The sauna is located near Yonsei University and the Ansan Mountain.
The ajumma’s check you in at the front desk and assign you with sauna “PJs”–men and women are different colors. Leave your street shoes in the shoe locker, take the corresponding key to the locker room downstairs, which is on the same key ring. After changing, slip on the black rubber slides provided and make your way to the sauna or in-house BBQ restaurant for a meal.
This sauna is unique, it is an old-style charcoal fueled sauna; with 3 different rooms ranging in heat—from warm (under 120F) to hotter (about 150F). This sauna has a steam room and an ice room to cool down. There are also segregated public baths, where you can strip down to bathe, but we opted out. There are additional services offered, including a barber, nail salon, massage services and massage chairs; a play area for the kids, a video game arcade and an area to gather and watch TV—something for everyone and a great place for family time. We sat in the general area after our sauna, cracked our smoked eggs and enjoyed it with our sikhye (rice
punch) from the snack bar.
We had a great and memorable experience with YJ. The 3-3.5 hours experience was time well spent and I highly recommend. While you can find many places in Seoul that offer the Korean dry sauna experience on your own, this one is unique! As of this review, this sauna closes at 22:00 and not 24 hours.
The posted fee includes the sauna fee as well as dinner at the sauna restaurant, and of course, the snacks and beverages.
